How do I use LinkedIn to find a job?

The short answer

Prepare your profile first, then turn on Open to Work and choose who can see it, and create job alerts by title and location. Apply early to suitable ads, and contact recruiters and people at your target companies with a short, clear message.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Prepare the profile before applying

Headline, About section and experience in the words of the job you are targeting, because the recruiter will open your profile after you apply.

  2. 2

    Turn on Open to Work

Set the job titles, locations and work type, and choose to show it to recruiters only or to all members. The second option adds the OpenToWork frame to your photo.

  3. 3

    Create job alerts

Search by job title and city, then turn on the alert so new jobs reach you daily or weekly, and apply early.

  4. 4

    Follow your target companies

Follow their pages and the people who work there, and leave useful comments on what they post.

  5. 5

    Message the right people

A short message to the recruiter or hiring manager naming the job you applied for and why you fit, in two sentences.

  6. 6

    Ask for a referral

If you know people at the company, ask them to refer you after you send them your CV and the link to the ad.

A common mistake

Turning on the OpenToWork frame while you are employed, without thinking about who will see it, is a common mistake. Choose recruiters only, and even then LinkedIn states that it cannot guarantee hiding it completely from your company.
