How do I compare two job offers?

The short answer

Compare monthly net pay, not gross, then the benefits, then what the numbers do not show: learning, the manager, promotion prospects and stability. Put it all in a weighted table that reflects your priorities now, and ask in writing for any missing details before you decide.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Work out the net pay

In Egypt, net pay is gross pay minus the employee's social insurance share, salary tax and the Martyrs Fund contribution, so calculate it for each offer with the salary calculator.

  2. 2

    Value the benefits

Medical insurance, allowances, guaranteed rather than expected incentives, leave and transport.

  3. 3

In the Gulf, check the basic salary

Housing, transport, air tickets and the share of basic salary in the total, because in the UAE end-of-service gratuity is calculated on basic salary under Article 51 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.

  4. 4

    Assess the learning

The skills you will gain, who you will work with, and whether the role brings you closer to your goal in two or three years.

  5. 5

    Check stability and the contract

Contract type and length, the probation period, the company's position, and your impression of your direct manager from the interview.

  6. 6

    A weighted table

Give each factor a weight based on your priorities and each offer a score, then check the result against your instinct before deciding.

A common mistake

Comparing gross pay alone misleads you. The offer with the higher gross may pay less net, have no medical insurance, or have a low basic salary on which the gratuity is calculated.
