First work out what kind of difficulty it is: a style different from yours, unclear expectations, or abusive behavior. You adapt to a style by learning what matters to them, you fix expectations in writing, and you document abuse and raise it with HR.
Step by step
- 1
Name the problem
A difference in style, pressure your manager is under, vague expectations, or insults and discrimination? Each needs a different approach.
- 2
Learn what matters to them
Speed, accuracy, numbers or detail, then present your work and updates the way they prefer.
- 3
Fix expectations in writing
After every important assignment, send a short message with what is required and the deadline as you understood them. It prevents disputes and records the agreement.
- 4
Discuss it in private
Choose a calm moment, talk about a specific situation and its effect on the work rather than about their personality, and suggest an alternative.
- 5
Document and raise abuse
Record insults, threats or discrimination with dates and details, and take them to HR or senior management according to company policy.
- 6
Know when to move on
If it continues despite your efforts and affects your health, look for an internal transfer or another job with a calm plan.
Complaining about your manager in front of colleagues or on social media usually reaches them, and weakens your position if you later need to make a formal complaint.
