How do I choose a name for my company or product?

The short answer

Choose a name that is easy to say and spell in Arabic and English, has no negative meaning in your market's dialects, and can be registered. Before you commit, check your country's commercial register and trademark database, and confirm the domain and social account names are available.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Pick a direction

A descriptive name that explains the business, an invented name whose meaning is built through marketing, or the founder's name. Each has its advantages and a different marketing cost.

  2. 2

    Gather many options

A list of at least twenty names, then drop any that are hard to say, too long or close to a competitor's name.

  3. 3

    Test pronunciation and meaning

Ask people in Egypt and the Gulf to say it and write it after hearing it, and make sure it has no unintended meaning in Arabic or English.

  4. 4

    Check availability

Search your country's commercial register and trademark database, Google and the platforms, so you do not build a brand on a name someone else has registered.

  5. 5

    Secure the digital assets

The domain and accounts on the main platforms under the same name or the closest version of it, before you announce the name.

  6. 6

    Register the trademark

Once decided, register the name and logo as a trademark in the countries where you operate, since registration protects your right to use them.

A common mistake

Committing to a name before checking that no one else has registered it can force you to change it after you have spent on identity, signage and marketing.
