What are working hours in Oman?

The short answer

Under Article 70 of the Labor Law issued by Royal Decree No. 53 of 2023, actual working hours cannot exceed 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week. In Ramadan the maximum for Muslim workers is 6 hours a day or 30 hours a week.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Daily and weekly limits

8 actual working hours a day and 40 hours a week at most.

  2. 2

    Breaks and continuous work

Working hours include a one-hour daily break for rest and meals that does not count as working time, and continuous work cannot exceed 6 hours.

  3. 3

    Ramadan

6 hours a day or 30 hours a week at most for Muslim workers.

  4. 4

    Weekly rest

Paid rest of at least two consecutive days, under Article 77.

  5. 5

    Overtime

With the worker's consent and up to 12 hours a day for regular and overtime hours together, paid at the basic hourly wage plus at least 25% by day and at least 50% at night, or with time off instead, under Article 71.

A common mistake

Assigning overtime without the worker's consent is a common mistake: Article 71 requires consent, except in the cases set in Article 72, such as annual stocktaking, emergencies and unusual work pressure.
