How long is the probation period under Egyptian labor law?

The short answer

Under Article 90 of Labor Law No. 14 of 2025, probation may not exceed three months and may be used only once with the same employer. It is set in the employment contract, the same rule that Article 33 of the old law contained.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Put it in the contract

State the probation period in the written employment contract, at three months or less.

  2. 2

    Only once

The same employee may not be put on probation a second time by the same employer, even under a new contract.

  3. 3

    Insurance from the start

Submit the employee's social insurance registration within two weeks of joining, as the National Organization for Social Insurance requires, without waiting for probation to end.

  4. 4

    Full rights

An employee on probation is a worker under the law, entitled to the minimum wage and the legal working hours and rest.

  5. 5

    Assess against written criteria

Set clear measures alongside the job description, and document the manager's assessment before the period ends.

  6. 6

Review a decision not to confirm

Article 90 sets no special procedure for ending the contract during probation, so have the decision reviewed legally before communicating it, and record the reasons in the employee file.

A common mistake

A common mistake is writing six months of probation into the contract, or ending probation and then signing a new probation contract with the same employee. Article 90 rules out both.
