How many days of annual leave does UAE labor law give?

The short answer

Under Article 29 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, an employee is entitled to paid annual leave of at least 30 days for each year of service. With more than six months but less than a year of service, the entitlement is two days for each month.

Step by step

  1. 1

One year of service or more

At least 30 days for each year of service.

  2. 2

    Less than a year

Two days for each month once service exceeds six months, plus leave for the part of the final year when service ends.

  3. 3

    Part-time work

Leave is in proportion to actual working hours, and the executive regulations set the method.

  4. 4

    Carry-over and refusal

With the employer's approval, up to half of the annual leave may be carried over to the next year, and the employer cannot prevent the employee from taking leave for more than two years.

  5. 5

Payment at the end of service

Cash is paid for the leave balance due, on basic salary, under Article 29 and Article 19 of the executive regulations.

A common mistake

Paying the leave balance at the end of service on gross salary instead of basic salary is a common mistake, because the law calculates it on basic salary.
