Are workers paid for public holidays in Egypt, and how is holiday work paid?

The short answer

Yes. Under Article 129 of Labor Law No. 14 of 2025, workers get paid leave on the holidays and occasions set by decision of the competent minister. If work needs require them to work on those days, they get twice the day's wage on top of the day's wage, or another day off instead at the worker's written request kept in his file.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Who sets the days

The competent minister issues a decision on public holidays, and Cabinet decisions on the subject apply to the religious holidays of non-Muslims.

  2. 2

    Pay for holiday work

The day's wage plus twice that wage, which is three times the day's wage in total.

  3. 3

    Or a day off instead

The worker may be given another day off instead, provided he asks in writing and the request is kept in his file.

  4. 4

    Weekly rest is different

Work on the weekly rest day falls under Article 121: an amount equal to the wage as compensation for the day and a replacement rest day in the following week.

  5. 5

    What changed

Article 52 of the old law capped public holidays at 13 days a year with the same pay for holiday work, while Article 129 sets no cap and adds the option of a replacement day at the worker's request.

  6. 6

    Document and pay

Issue a written instruction for holiday work, and record in payroll the day's wage plus twice that wage, or the date of the replacement day.

A common mistake

Paying only a normal day's wage for working on a holiday, or giving a replacement day without the worker's written request, both breach Article 129.
