How many days of annual leave does Qatar's labor law give?

The short answer

Under Article 79 of Qatar Labor Law No. 14 of 2004, after one full continuous year of service a worker gets paid annual leave of at least three weeks. It becomes at least four weeks once service reaches five years, and leave accrues for part years in proportion.

Step by step

  1. 1

    The qualifying year

Leave is due after one full continuous year with the employer, and for part years in proportion to the time served.

  2. 2

    Length

At least three weeks for service under five years, and at least four weeks for five years or more.

  3. 3

    Pay

Leave pay is calculated on the basic wage on the date it falls due, under Article 72.

  4. 4

    Timing and splitting

The employer sets the date according to work needs. With the worker's consent it may be split into no more than two periods, and up to half may be postponed to the next year at the worker's written request, under Article 80.

  5. 5

    No waiver

Any agreement to waive the leave is void, and the worker is paid cash for the leave days due if the contract ends for any reason before they are taken, under Article 81.

A common mistake

Paying cash for leave every year instead of granting it is a common mistake: Article 81 voids any waiver, and cash is paid only when the contract ends before the leave is taken.
